The Elf Knight and the Faerie Queene
The following was written by the talented film maker Celestial Elf: and available on youtube:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0b0AcCtnVo Please subscribe and read his blogs at:  http://celestialelfdanceoflife.blogspot.com/2012/01/elf-knight-faerie-queene.html Inspired by Spencer's poem ''The Faerie Queene'' c 1590+1596 which celebrates ''Queen Elizabeth I'', and the Scottish folk song ''The Elfin Knight''. Set to ''Scarborough Fair'' sung by Gretchen Cornwall of World Tree Music, The British folk song presents the story of a man who tells the listener to ask his former love to perform a series of impossible tasks to win his love back. In this version the task setter is the Faerie Queene, ''Gloriana''. 'Scarborough Fair' is apparently derived from 'The Elfin Knight' and Nick Caffrey notes the oldest version is c 1600-1650. Although there is no stated link between the songs and the English Courts of the time, the similarities between Caffreys's earliest version and Spenser's English Court literature, that they both uphold the same honor of temperance, or chastity, suggests that may be a causal link between them. In another Scottish version, Tam Lin was enchanted and kidnapped by the Elf Queen and bound by her spell, only set free by the love of a mortal woman. The chorus of 'Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme' may refer to a charm to protect against the plague, or alternately and more enchantingly be a love charm. Paul Simon learned Scarborough Fair in London in 1965 from Martin Carthy, who had picked up the tune from the songbook by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger. Art Garfunkel then set it in counterpoint with "Canticle" with new, anti-war lyrics and it became the famous lead track of the 1966 album Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme.
