Based on the 8th century Chinese Poem Rihaku, translated by Ezra Pound
Up on the North Gate, the wind blows full of sand
I have watched, a long lonely time
Trees change, the leaves go yellow with Autumn
I climb the towers to watch over this barbarous land…
Beyond the castle, the sky and the mountains
Bones heaped high on the plains below
Dry white in the frost and fade away…
Who has brought us, to this place?
Who has brought down this flaming anger?
Who has brought the army with its drums?
Barbarous kings with hearts full of greed…
And sorrow, sorrow, sorrow like rain
Sorrow in going and sorrow back again
Children of war play on blood-soaked fields
Up on the North Gate, the wind blows full of sand
I have watched, a long lonely time
Trees change, the leaves go yellow with Autumn
I climb the towers to watch over this barbarous land…
Watching over this land
